The Learning & Development Projects at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College is presenting an Article 81 Guardianship Training.

This one-day remote learning opportunity was developed and designed for aspiring guardians, court evaluators, and/or counsel for the alleged incapacitated person so that they can effectively serve in those roles in Mental Hygiene Law (MHL) Article 81 Guardianship proceedings.  

The curriculum details the history of MHL Article 81 and the process by which a guardian is appointed and discusses the duties and roles of the various appointees as prescribed by New York State Law.  Part of the training focuses a few specific issues pertaining to: medical advocacy, fiduciary matters, and how guardians can access support services and other resources in the community.

Presenter Information

Mark E. Maves, Esq. is a Trainer/Curriculum Developer for the Learning & Development Projects at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. He is also Counsel to the New York Public Welfare Association, and a contracted legal consultant for the Monroe County DSS. Previously, he worked for the Monroe County Law Department, representing the local social services district in a variety of areas, including APS, CPS/foster care, and public benefits, as well as providing guidance in matters such as confidentiality and contracts.

This curriculum is approved by New York State Office of Court Administration. Participants who satisfactorily complete this training are eligible to apply for enrollment on the Fiduciary (Part 36) List of the Office of Court Administration as guardians, court evaluators, and attorneys for alleged incapacitated persons.

CLE Credits for Attorneys
This Article 81 Guardianship Training is an accredited course for attorneys seeking Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits.

Participants must attend the full training to receive credits

Partial and full scholarships are available for individuals in need of tuition assistance to attend for the course.
